Yeh, yeh... I did learn a lot from sculpting these two and I even kind of like them. But that is not the reason behind this post.
The thing is... Every time I do show my work to either strangers or friends, zbrush sculptures (like these) seem to stand out. Ironically, their making is way less complex than those of the other models posted in this blog. And since I didn't went through the trouble of reconstructing their topology, they are good for stills and nothing else. If you didn't get the last part, GREAT, it will only make it easier for me to illustrate the point here. You see, it's funny how your tastes and interests change once you start developing in a certain area. I do struggle a lot not to become a person that sees technique over content, but I'm not always capable of doing so. Alas one can't help but to remember how simple some things are in comparison to others, even if the first seems more laborious than the later.
That being said, the only thing that I could think that roughly resembles a personal conclusion to this matter is that I can't afford to be so naive as to neglect one's opinions based on their lack of technical or artistic insight. Doing so would mean trashing one of my few well-established beliefs, the one that says that the one thing that a piece needs to be considered good is the ability to reach deep into one's mind or heart.

Today I decided to organize some drawers and eventually came across my sketch folder. Since I couldn't miss the chance to evaluate my own progress through last year, I scattered a bunch of sheets across the floor and started studying them.

I did feel a decent improvement in my drawing skill and anatomical notions, but I'm far from being satisfied. And that's why I always say: “Take good care of you work, kids.” Even those dirty doodles will surely get you a new perspective on your own work and help you spot what are the critical areas that need polishing.

2009 will be a year dedicated to dynamic poses and chiaro-oscuro techniques, wish me luck :]

Should you mix a bit of automobile nostalgia with daring lines and a roaring V8 engine, what would you get??? Well, how the hell should I know?! I'm not really into this sports car stuff, but when I was asked to pick a car as reference for my 3D modeling class, I knew it had to be a muscle car. At first I tried the classical Camaro SS 1968, but the lack of proper references and blueprints convinced me to go for the Camaro Concept 2008. Althougt I don't regret the change of plans, a part of me still thinks that this matter won't be settled until I model the old school Camaro.

This was by far the most complex and time consuming 3d model I've ever done, and even so, I loved every second spent on it. Special thanks to the Melies crew, both teachers and fellow students.

When a friend from college gave me his drawing notebook, the first thing I thought was: "Oh Man.. He really doesn't want to do that." Obviously that with the notebook came a request: "Hey, could you draw something for me? Anything will do... And please, take your time while at it". The "take your time" part was what actually made me feel sorry for him. Although he deserved faster and BETTER, it took me nearly 4 months to find time and will to draw him this simple sketch. A piece that I could have done in a single afternoon.
I'm such a terrible person T_T.

contest CONTENDER

Some months ago I entered a promotional contest on Deviant Art. The challenge was to create a character, villain, monster or background as if it was to take part in the Square Enix action-rpg "The World Ends with You". My eyes tingled with the idea of even pretending to design a character for a big developer's game, so, there I went.

I've admired Tetsuya Nomura's (Square-Enix's most famous character designer) work for as long as I can remember and although his heavily manga based style does bodder me a little, I really felt like if the character was to blend into the WEWY universe it should look like one of Nomura's creations.

Emulating another person's style, although fun, is not the kind of thing you want to do very often. Mainly because it forces you to do things in ways you are not used to, which really slows you down. And even more complicated than that, you have to place yourself in that artist's shoes during most of the creative process. Nonetheless, it's a pretty straight forward way to learn from your favorite artists. :]

Akane (the character) is in fact a redesign of another original character which I had done for fun about a month before the contest came along. Here you can see the sketches of the original Akane as well as the contest entry (done on Adobe Illustrator CS3), together with it's brief description.

It's been some time since I've started studying cg painting. Learning by yourself can be a tireing, and sometimes frustrating, process, but for each improvement made there is an unparalleled sense of achievement.
The subject for these pieces is a college friend. I really don't know why, but it seems as her pictures compel me to draw and paint :] .

Hi there boys'n'gals!

I, Lucas de Senna, rumblely welcome you to my newly created blog. "prancheta e paraná", which can be roughly translated as "clipboard and cartboard", is all about showcasing my endeavours as a concept and 3D artist. It's a place for both serious pieces and thumbnail sketches... so... let's start with one of each!

Meet "Dolly", a cartoonish character somewhat based on my girlfriend. But don't worry, although grumpy, "Dolly" is a very passionate girl :]
